How to replace em dashes in text
A tool can replace a character consistently, but it cannot decide whether every sentence would read better with a comma, colon, parentheses, or a full stop. Use automatic replacement to find and standardize the character, then make the editorial choices the passage needs.
Consider “One issue remains—the missing signature.” A colon might fit the explanation. In “The package—which arrived yesterday—is ready”, paired commas or parentheses may be more natural. Turning every dash into the same hyphen can leave awkward punctuation even when the mechanical replacement worked exactly as requested.
Em dash, en dash, hyphen, and minus sign differences
The hyphen-minus on a keyboard, the en dash, the em dash, and the mathematical minus sign are separate characters. A range, a compound word, and subtraction are not interchangeable uses. Review dates, negative numbers, command-line options, and formulas before applying a broad punctuation change.
Keep code separate from prose. A long dash copied into a command option may need an ASCII hyphen, but a dash inside a string can be intentional data. Conversely, replacing an actual minus sign in a mathematical explanation may reduce typographic clarity. Choose a rule that serves the destination rather than a blanket rule for every document.
Do em dashes indicate AI-generated text?
People use em dashes in novels, journalism, emails, and technical writing. AI systems can use them too. Their presence does not prove AI authorship, and their absence does not prove that a person wrote the text. This utility is a formatting aid, not an AI detector bypass.
After conversion, read the passage aloud or review it sentence by sentence. Check paired interruptions, quotation marks, spaces around replacement punctuation, and any meaning changed by a new sentence boundary. Keep required citations and disclosures. A consistent style is useful when it makes the content clearer to its actual readers.
